Autos on Welfare
Sierra Club National
Almost a billion dollars is what the Measure D tax in Santa Barbara County will have raised over its 20 year life. It is a sales tax paid by all who buy goods in the County, including the one-third of residents who do not drive. Yet almost all of that money has gone for road work that historically was paid for with fuel taxes on motorists. This represents an enormous subsidy for private motor vehicle use that puts sustainable transportation at a disadvantage. For more information about these subsidies, please read the Sierra Club page "America's Autos on Welfare".
