July 4-6
BACKPACK COTTONWOOD LAKES: Moderate backpack, 12.5 mrt with 1000-foot gain to Muir Lake. This is one of the most beautiful areas in the Sierras. You will to fall in love with the Sierras. Saturday, day-1, hike in. Day-2, spend it at the lake or join the group to visit nearby lakes, lake 4, 5 and 6th. There will be some cross-country hiking involved. Bring goodies to share for Saturday happy hour. NEVADA WILDERNESS SERVICE: Eastern Nevada's White Pine County has MANY new wilderness areas. July 11-12
WHITE MOUNTAINS CANYON EXPLORATION: We'll camp in the Hamill Valley east of Bishop and explore Pellisier and Birch Canyons in two-day hikes. I have not found any information on Pellisier Canyon and don't know whether we can get past the formidable-looking narrows shown on the topo map, but we should definitely take a look. I know the Birch Canyon narrows can be surmounted, but there may be some route-finding involved. We won't attempt any real rock-climbing. Limit 12. GAVIOTA CAVES: Hike up about 500 feet from Gaviota beach and explore the caves and wind tunnels in the ridges above and proceed to overlook. Some rock scrambling and agility required. About 4 mrt. SYCAMORE CANYON / DANIELSON RANCH HIKE: Easy, leisurely paced 8 mrt hike thru Big Sycamore Canyon to Ranch Headquarters/Danielson Ranch for lunch under the trees at campfire area. Bring water, lunch; wear hiking shoes, hat. Meet 9am at old bridge by entrance to Sycamore Canyon campground (parking fee). TED GUENTHER 985-8963 (SP)

July 18
SAN JOSE CREEK LOOP: This is an easy 3 mrt hike, exploring the neighborhood trails and roads of San Jose Creek in North Goleta. We will begin near the intersection of N. Kellogg and Calle Real and follow the creek on trails and adjacent roads. We'll travel north of Cathedral Oaks Rd., then return via creek trails, retracing part of our initial route. URBAN HIKE TO FRANCHESCI PARK: Start near the Mission, walk through the Riviera, then up the "1000 steps" to a great view of the city and harbor. Return via Las Tunas Rd. Some steep sections. MONDAY MORNING WALK: Meet 9am end of Fifth Street, Oxnard, to do beach walk (two hours) PAT 643-0270 (SP)

July 25
PIEDRA BLANCA: Moderate 8 mrt hike across the Sespe and up Piedra Blanca Creek, then some rock and boulder scrambling (strenuous) to some deep pools for swimming and lunch. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch, snacks, bug repellent, hat, swimsuit, hiking shoes, and sandals for water crossings. Meet at 9am.
