November 6-8
MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE SERVICE TRIP: We will visit the California desert when temperatures are cooler and clean up a large illegal dump area on National Park Service land that has built up over the years. Staff from the Mojave National Preserve will join us for National Public Lands Day. A hike is planned for Friday for those arriving in the morning. We will work all day Saturday and until noon on Sunday. We will hear a ranger talk about the Preserve on Friday evening. Camping will be rustic, but a portable restroom will be provided. We'll be treated to a barbecue by the Preserve staff on Saturday evening. A high clearance vehicle is recommended to access the site, but we can shuttle people and gear if needed. MONTECITO - POLO CLUB TRAIL LOOP: Rediscover one of Montecito’s neighborhood trails. An easy-moderate 4 mrt, with one steep section. We will start this hike from the Polo Club trailhead on Romero Cyn Rd. Hiking through oaks, orchards and horse ranches, we will travel to the Summerland Greenwell Preserve, then follow the Reservoir Trail to a spot where we can see the Summerland Reservoir, part of the Federal water system that originates with Lake Cachuma. A light lunch, then loop back to the Polo Club Trail, retracing the path to our cars. Bring a light lunch and water. Meet at 9am at the Bank of America parking lot, Hope Ave & State St. Bring water and a light snack. GERRY 964-5411 (SB)

“BOWLING ALLEY” CAR CAMP & HIKE – DEATH VALLEY PROPOSED WILDERNESS ADDITION: This narrow strip of land between Death Valley National Park and Fort Irwin is lovingly referred to as the “Bowling Alley” and is an ideal wilderness candidate. With unique and beautiful geology, several perennial springs, and habitat for desert tortoise and bighorn sheep, we’ll have lots to explore! LA PURISIMA MISSION: This site is on the possible California Parks closure list, so lets visit it while we can. We will hike through the built-up historical area and the backcountry trails of La Purisima Mission near Lompoc, (8 mrt). This is a moderate to strenuous hike with some sand hills to climb. Bring water and lunch, meet at the Mission parking lot at 9am. Rain cancels. Hikes are subject to change, always contact the leader. JERRY 928-3598 (AR)

LIZARD'S MOUTH CLEANUP: Have fun exploring while making this popular spot a bit cleaner! Beautiful rock formations and wind caves are a pleasure to enjoy and restore! SYCAMORE CANYON TRAIL: Meet Wilderness Basics Course leaders, enjoy the beautiful fall scenery in Sycamore Canyon, and find out about the upcoming course during an easy 4 mile walk. CANINE HIKE ROMERO CANYON: Moderate hike up hill along Romero Creek, mostly shaded trail, then back down the fire road. Total 6 miles, 1500 ft elevation gain. Well behaved dogs welcomed and encouraged; must be leashed. Bring snack and water for you and your canine companion. Hikers without dogs welcome too. Meet at B of A parking lot at 9am. ULTIMATE HIKE: Very strenuous 17.5 mile hike. This up-and-down (5000') hike covers parts of 9 different trails on the front range. This is a fast paced hike for experienced, conditioned hikers only. URBAN HIKE TO FRANCHESCI PARK: Start near the Mission, walk through the Riviera, then up the "1000 steps" to a great view of the city and harbor. Return via Las Tunas Rd. Some steep sections.
