SUMMERLAND WALK: Join us for a 3.5 mrt walk through the back hills of Summerland. We’ll use little used paths, starting at Oceanview Park, to walk the trails above Summerland, returning on the back streets of the town. Easy, but lots of hills. SUNSET/MOONRISE HIKE AND POTLUCK AT LOS FLORES RANCH: We’ll hike to the ridge top, eat, and watch as the full moon comes up and sun goes down a few minutes later (5 miles round trip, moderate). ANTELOPE PROTECTION WORK PARTY/CARCAMP - CARRIZO PLAIN NAT’L MONUMENT: Come help remove fences to allow the beautiful and endangered pronghorn antelope unobstructed access to all areas of the Plain. We have succeeded in clearing the American Ranch area; join us as we work on the Panorama Ranch. Camp at Selby campground, bring food, water, heavy-leather work gloves, and camping gear for the weekend. Potluck Sat night. Meet at the Goodwin Visitors’ Center at 9:00 am Sat. Rain cancels. WILDERNESS RESTORATION - DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK: The currently planned project is to finish the conversion to a trail of the northern end of the old Mesquite Flats/Death Valley crossover road, which used to join the Scotty's Castle road near Red Wall Canyon. Meet Sunday evening or early Monday morning, work Monday and Tuesday. Potluck Monday night. On Wednesday, there will be a ranger lead hike for those who can stay over. (Project may change). MIDDLE MATILIJA CAMP: Moderate 8 mrt along stream, mostly shaded, to Middle Matilija Camp. There are at least 17 creek crossings, but we will have no problem rock hopping across. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and good pair of hiking shoes/boots, and hat. Meet 8am at Ventura carpool (Seaward and Harbor between Carrow's and Bank) or 8:45am at trailhead. EXPLORING THE SODA MOUNTAINS MOJAVE DESERT: We will explore the ridges and deep washes of this relatively unknown and rugged Wilderness Study Area(WSA), located east of Barstow and north of I-15. Arrive late Saturday afternoon at the camping area in the open flats near the Cronese Lakes. Potluck Saturday night. The full day hike on Sunday will help us appreciate a unique place and to comment upon the future of this WSA which is currently uncertain. Hike is moderately difficult. GHOST TOWN EXTRAVAGANZA: What could be more appropriate this Halloween weekend than to visit the ghosts and ruins of California's colorful past? Come with us to this eerie desert landscape near Death Valley. Camp at the historic ghost town of Ballarat (flush toilets & hot showers). On Sat, do a challenging hike to ghost town Lookout City with expert Hal Fowler who will regale us with tales of this wild west town. Sat. evening, Happy Hour and a potluck feast, followed by a midnight visit to Ballarat's graveyard. On Sun, a quick visit to the infamous Riley town site before heading home.
