Naples Beach Hike - Rare Opportunity

When:

Sep 28, 2008
2:00-5:00 PM

Details:

The Sierra Club and the Naples Coalition invite the public to participate in a rare opportunity to walk along the beach from the public access at the Bacara Resort to the bluffs on the Gaviota coast Naples property. The hike will be co-lead by Ada Babine from the Santa Barbara Group and Phil McKenna of the Naples Coalition and promises to be both fun and an informative experience. The trip will be possible because of an afternoon low tide.

The Naples Coalition seeks to maintain and protect the rural character of the Naples property on the Gaviota Coast. The 485 acre Naples property (also known as Santa Barbara Ranch) is two miles west of the Goleta city boundary on the gateway to the Gaviota Coast.  Although the land is zoned for agriculture with 100 acre minimum parcels, the County has recognized as many as 219 much smaller lots based on an 1888 “antiquated subdivision” purporting to subdivide the property.  Vintage Communities, an Orange County development company, has an application pending with the County of Santa Barbara to build from 54 to 72 large luxury houses on this rural agricultural land.

The hike will leave from the Public Access parking lot at Haskell's Beach adjoining the Bacara Resort at 2:00 PM sharp. Please arrive by 1:45. The walk is about 2 miles one way and crosses a rocky point that will be mostly dry on this day due to a minus low tide. Allow three hours to leisurely complete the walk. Bring a pair of old beach shoes (for the rocky point crossing and the occasional beach tar), layered warm clothing, and any water or snacks needed for the walk. No dogs are allowed in order to protect the seal rookery located on the hike to the Naples property. Please car pool if possible.

About The Naples Coalition:

The Naples Coalition is a Santa Barbara County, CA-based association of local non-profit groups including the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club, Santa Barbara Chapter of Surfrider Foundation, Santa Barbara Chapter of the Audubon Society, Citizens Planning Association of Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Community Action Network, and The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara County. The Naples Coalition is dedicated to the preservation of the rural character of the Naples property on the Gaviota coast. Specifically, the Naples Coalition is responding to Vintage Communities, an Orange County development company that purchased the Naples townsite lots and has an application pending with the County of Santa Barbara to build from 54 to 72 large luxury houses on the rural Naples property. The Naples Coalition seeks to preserve the rural character of the Naples area from this development’s impacts.
