Oil

Petroleum has been important to Santa Barbara since prehistoric times. Early on it seemed like a natural blessing. Native Americans used tar found on local beaches to waterproof their ocean going canoes.  By the mid-twentieth century oil companies were rushing to profit from relatively easy to access oil. The price for this blessing was brought home with devastating clarity in 1969 when oil spilled freely from an off shore rig.  Nearly forty years later a local oil company reports almost daily oil spills... 

 

 

Veneco Expansion Plans

    Venoco Inc. has filed an application to expand oil development off the coast of Goleta and install a pipeline from the Elwood Onshore Facility (EOF) to Las Flores Canyon (LFC).
